1. Apple Watch Series 9

Thanks for its outstanding combination of health and fitness functions, smartwatch functionality, and general efficiency, the Apple Watch Series 9 continues to lead the smartwatch field. There isn't a better smartwatch out there for iOS users, and it's so fantastic that it might even convince people to buy an iOS smartphone.

The Apple Watch Series 9, which was launched in September 2023, was not considered a significant generational shift from the Series 8, which was released the year before. It did, however, reveal a faster new processing chip along with a few other features that made it more accessible.

Improved on-device Siri access, improved Smart Stack capabilities, a brighter display, and perhaps the most noteworthy—the Double Tap Gesture—are among the new enhancements. With the Double Tap Gesture, users can interact with any app's main button by tapping their thumb and index finger together twice. It can, for example, snooze an alarm, start or stop a timer, and answer or hang up a call.

Although you can use your hands to interact with your Apple Watch even when you have a full hand, this new motion is a significant improvement in terms of accessibility. Now, users may still utilize the watch's apps even if they have trouble using the touchscreen. This significantly changes the functionality of the watch, especially when combined with the Series 9's on-device Siri access.

Even with those changes, the Series 9 remains an efficient fitness and health tracker with a number of features like stress management, blood oxygen monitoring, and sleep tracking. Its Mindfulness app now has additional mental health features that let users record their feelings at various times of the day.

Offering features for any type of user, the Apple Watch Series 9 maintains the tradition of being a high-quality wearable. Not only is it the greatest Apple Watch money can buy, but it's also the best smartwatch, offering a premium smartwatch experience along with advanced health and fitness tracking features.

2. Apple Watch SE 2

With the introduction of the S8 chipset—the same processor found in the much more expensive Apple Watch 8—the original Apple Watch SE was a great option for customers looking for a basic watchOS experience at a significantly lower price than the mainline numbered Apple Watches. The Watch SE 2 builds on this trend, adding a few high-end features while also slightly lowering the price.

The main improvement of the SE 2 is that it has the same lightning-fast performance as Apple's most recent wearable, so choosing the less expensive model won't affect your day-to-day activities.

Apple's new accelerometer, which is also included in the SE 2, enables the watch to determine whether you've been in a car collision before alerting the police. Naturally, it's the kind of feature that you would prefer to never need to use, but knowing that it exists does provide some comfort.

Naturally, the limitations of the original Watch SE still apply, such as the absence of the blood oxygen sensor and the ECG monitor, as well as the lack of an always-on display. Purchasing one of the top Apple Watches is beneficial if you feel that any of those features are necessary.

Even without those extra sensors, the Apple Watch SE 2 offers excellent workout tracking, especially when it comes to how well it syncs with the iPhone fitness app, which lets you know exactly how well you've been hitting your fitness goals. It also has built-in GPS tracking and support for offline playback via Apple Music.

If you already own the original Apple Watch SE, upgrading isn't worth it, but if you're looking for your first wearable at a reasonable price, the Apple Watch SE 2 is a great option.

3. Fibit Versa 3

The Versa 3 is still the best device, even if the Versa 4 is Fitbit's latest release. First of all, it has a significant advantage over the Versa 4 due to its ability to interact with third-party apps. Moreover, its GPS tracking and syncing performance is far better.

The main factor making the Versa 3 unique is most likely its capability for third-party apps. Fitbit's decision to discontinue support for third-party apps on the Versa 4 means that the Versa 3 is now the only Fitbit wristwatch with that feature.

Because you aren't dependent on the pre-installed apps, you will have a far better wristwatch experience as a result. Among the best things about any smartwatch is the ability to customize what you use.

Beyond app support and fitness tracking, the Versa 3 performs exceptionally well. Additionally, it functions as a seamless extension of your smartphone, providing easy-to-read notifications for calls, texts, emails, and apps—especially on the large, brilliant watch face. It's helpful to be able to quickly examine workout numbers and navigate through apps on a screen this size.

In-depth sleep monitoring, a continuous heart rate monitor, and menstrual cycle tracking are among the health-tracking functions it provides. Fitbit is primarily recognized for its straightforward activity trackers, but the Versa 3 is a feature-rich wristwatch that is also among the best Fitbits available.

4. Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

The best choice right now if you're not an iPhone user and want a high-end smartwatch with lots of apps is the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. Although its overall performance may not have reached the same heights as those of the Apple Watch 7, it is still our favorite Android-compatible wristwatch at the moment.

Its extremely durable design has a sapphire screen, titanium bezel, IP68 impermeability, and 5ATM water resistance. Despite not having a variable refresh rate, the Super AMOLED screen is incredibly bright, has great contrast, and is big enough to see text and symbols well.

The focus on sleep tracking is a standout feature of the health tracking options, which we found to be varied and helpful. The inbuilt route navigation is a great help if you're an outdoor enthusiast, though it can be tricky to set up. The majority of fitness tracking is reliable as well; however, you might not receive as many post-workout statistics as you would from a high-end Garmin.

For a smartwatch of this type, the battery life typically lasts 3–4 days with regular use, which is respectable. The charging time (1 hour and 22 minutes) is also respectable, although not the fastest in the class.

  • Large size not suitable for smaller wrists

  • Blood pressure certification taking much longer than advertised

5. Apple Watch Ultra 2

Although it costs a bit more, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 provides a wristwatch experience that is almost identical to that of the Series 9. For serious athletes or individuals who spend a lot of time outside, it may be worth the additional expense, even though it might not be the best option for casual users.

The features and internal technology designed for tracking sports like cycling, diving, and climbing are mostly at fault for this. These improvements include enhanced altitude readings, tracking compatibility for wakeboarding, scuba diving, and freediving, and a brighter screen that is easier to view in bright lighting.

In comparison to the Series 9, the Ultra 2 has a larger, more durable design and a battery that lasts up to two full days instead of requiring daily recharging. Comparing it to the Series 9 and other smartwatches in this list, the longer battery life is a major plus because it allows you to use the watch for longer periods of time as intended.

The Action Button on the Ultra 2, which can be set to launch many programs, such as the shortcuts app, the fitness tracking app, and the stopwatch, is my favorite feature of the device. The Action Button is particularly useful for activities since, unlike the Series 9, it lets you hit it whenever you're positioned and prepared to go, rather than starting after a brief three-second countdown. This helps in waiting for the GPS to synchronize as well.

Faster on-device Siri access and the newly introduced Double Tap Gesture, which also made an appearance on the Series 9, are two more outstanding additions. It also features an upgraded ultra-wideband chip that increases location accuracy, in addition to the new S9 CPU chip.

The Ultra 2 is a good wearable for casual users, even if it has a lot of features targeted at experienced athletes. It has similar smartwatch functionality and shares the same health and fitness tracking features as the Series 9.

  • No offline mapping

  • May be too large for small wrists

  • Ultra Wideband only works with iPhone 15

6. Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic

For many years, Samsung's Galaxy Watch collection of wearables has been the greatest Android watch available. That appears to remain that way for at least another generation, especially with the launch of the Watch 6 Classic.

Reintroducing the rotating bezel, which was last seen on the Watch 4, was one of the best enhancements Samsung made to the Watch 6 Classic. The rotating bezel makes it simple and seamless to navigate the watch's settings and interface, especially when wearing gloves or working out. Not that using the touchscreen is difficult, but occasionally I noticed that it would take a little longer for the screen to respond to a swipe than if I had just spun the dial.

Another good improvement to the watch is its longer battery life. The majority of Galaxy Watches, with the exception of the Watch 5 Pro, require recharging at least once a day by traveling to a charger. Even our top choice, the Apple Watch Series 8, needs daily charging, so this was never a deal breaker.

On the other hand, if your watch has a battery that lasts longer than a day, you can be sure to get the most use out of it. It can be used as a sleep tracker at night and as a wristwatch and fitness tracker during the day. I was able to accomplish just that with the Watch 6 Classic during my time with it because of its longer battery.

While not every Watch 6 user will utilize every feature, even casual users will find plenty to do with their device. In addition to the available activities and sleep tracking, other features include a temperature sensor, a cycle tracker, a stress tracker, an ECG, a body composition analyzer, and a temperature reader.

The highlight of these is the body composition analyzer, which I used to graph my muscle mass and body fat percentage, and the stress tracker, which recorded my individual stress levels throughout the day and offered suggestions for attempting to reduce them.

In addition, I had a great time wearing the Watch 6 Classic. Its lightweight, comfy style was just as pleasant to wear when working out or sleeping as it was when I was at my workplace.

The watch has a traditional round watch face style that feels and looks beautiful on the wrist. It was the ideal size on my arm, but I could see it being a little bit big for someone with smaller wrists (and I enjoy larger watch faces). However, keep this in mind if you're not a fan of large watch faces.

The only thing I find annoying with the Watch 6 Classic is that it's not really that different from the Watch 5 that came before it. Although the Watch 5 may also download the most recent Wear OS, it does use it. This implies, however, that individuals with a Watch 4 or older would benefit most from an upgrade to the Watch 6 Classic, while owners of a Watch 5 should hold off until the Watch 7 is released in the following year.

7. Google Pixel Watch 2

Many features that were absent from the first Pixel Watch were gradually added by Google over the period of a year after its launch. Thus, the Pixel Watch 2 (7/10, WIRED Recommends) offers nearly all of the features you could possibly need. Exercise detection that starts and stops on its own, fall detection, SpO2 readings, and an elegantly redesigned Fitbit app are all included. This time, Google has even introduced Safety Check, which lets you share your position with emergency contacts in case you don't get back to them after a set amount of time. Along with identifying both positive and negative stress, a new Body Response component also provides coping mechanisms, such as guided breathing exercises.

In my opinion, this smartwatch remains the most beautiful and comfortable to wear. It shines in terms of health and fitness features as well, offering dependable heart rate and sleep tracking data in addition to an enhanced exercise screen that presents the most crucial information—including heart rate zones—at a glance. Electrocardiograms can be obtained, and an irregular heart rate can also be watched for. Unfortunately, the watch's battery life is only fairly long—about a day—and it cannot be fixed. Under the terms of the one-year warranty, you will need to acquire a replacement if you experience problems. Although it charges the smartwatch more quickly than the original Pixel Watch charger, I also dislike that it comes with yet another proprietary charger.

8. Garmin Venu 3

Similar to the Swiss Army Knife of smartwatches, the Garmin Venu 3 AMOLED Touchscreen Display Smart Watch is almost multifunctional. It can also accomplish anything superbly, just like that renowned Victorinox tool. Your bike ride, run, walk, gym session, and more can all be tracked with the Venu 3. Along with other health indicators, it tracks your heart rate variability, blood oxygen levels, and pulse. With its precise GPS capabilities, it can assist you in finding your way whether you're driving, walking, or riding a bike.

Additionally, this watch and your phone pair smoothly, enabling you to answer calls, read or dictate texts, and receive notifications right away. A Venu 3 watch's battery will typically last an amazing two weeks, even with its vivid, full-color AMOLED touchscreen display, which measures 1.4 inches in diameter to make viewing comfortable. It is useful when using features like the watch's animated on-screen exercises or when looking at images.

The way we engage with technology has been completely transformed by smartwatches, which can be used for anything from managing our schedules to tracking our health progress to simply dressing up our outfits with some flare.
