Introduction
As 2024 comes to an end, I thought it would be the perfect time to write an article on the top flagship smartphones that were released this year. With new models frequently replacing older models with even better capabilities, the smartphone market has been dynamic. In a previous article, I’ve already covered the best smartphones, but since newer devices have taken their place, I won’t be including any of those in this list. Instead, this article focuses on the standout flagship smartphones of 2024 that have impressed with their performance, design, and features. These devices offer faster processors, improved camera systems, and enhanced battery life, setting a new standard for what consumers can expect.
1. Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro Max introduces a larger 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display, the biggest ever on an iPhone, with a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate for smooth performance and power efficiency. It maintains the same flat titanium frame and matte finish design as before, with minor changes in size and weight. Thanks to the A18 Pro chipset, it delivers a 15% improvement in CPU and a 20% increase in graphics performance over the previous year. Battery life is increased by a 4,685mAh capacity, giving an exceptional active use score of 17 hours and 18 minutes. Both wireless and reverse wireless charging are enabled, and the charging power stays at 30W, reaching 46% in 30 minutes.
The cameras come with a hardware camera shutter key for extra control and a brand-new 48MP ultrawide sensor. While the 5x telephoto camera offers great detail but is unable to focus close, the primary camera's images are crisp, clear, and accurately capture natural color. Although some cameras' dynamic range and noise levels may be improved, night photography is generally good. Sharp macro images are possible with the ultrawide's focusing; however, the brightness could be improved at night. 4K slow motion at 120 frames per second with improved audio and stabilization is one of the video capabilities.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max offers a larger display, better performance, improved cameras, and great battery life. While the upgrades may not justify switching from the 15 Pro Max, it’s a flagship worth considering for those looking for Apple’s latest features.

The Pixel 9 Pro boasts an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, a glossy frame, and a matte Gorilla Glass Victus 2 back. Running on the Tensor G4 chipset, it provides seamless performance but struggles with thermal management and lags behind rivals in benchmarks.
With 27W wired and wireless charging capabilities, the battery lasts 13 hours and 11 minutes when in active use. It takes over 90 minutes to fully charge.
A 50MP primary sensor, a 48MP autofocus ultrawide, and a 48MP 5x telephoto lens are all part of the camera package. Natural processing adds definition to daytime photos, and low-light performance is good. While the selfie camera takes crisp, lifelike pictures, the ultrawide camera takes colorful pictures and close-up macro shots.

3. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6, with its new AI features, brighter screens, and sleeker design, continues the trend of folding phones. The Z Fold 6 may function as a normal smartphone with an exterior secondary screen when its inner folding display is folded or as a small tablet when it is open. The design remains similar to last year’s model but is thinner, lighter, and includes IP48 dust protection in addition to waterproofing. The external cover screen is now slightly larger and wider at 6.3 inches with a 22:9 aspect ratio, while the inner screen is a 7.6-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Both screens are bright, crisp, and compatible with HDR 10+. The phone still accepts styluses and features Samsung's flex hinge, which enables it to be held open at any angle, even if it lacks an integrated holder for the S Pen. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset drives performance, ensuring flagship-level multitasking and gaming capabilities even though heat throttling is still a problem. The 4,400mAh battery is capable of 25W and wireless charging. The camera system, which consists of a 50MP primary camera, a 10MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, works effectively, especially in low light.
Although the Z Fold 6 is a good foldable flagship, it hasn't changed much from the Z Fold 5. If you already own the Z Fold 5, the new model's smaller, thinner design, brighter display, and newest processor might not be enough to warrant an upgrade. With a few changes, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers a comparable experience, making the Z Fold 5 a better option for those looking for a foldable phone at a lower cost.

It features a new 1-inch sensor and a variable aperture on the main camera, along with zoom cameras that excel at close-up macro shots. The phone has a flagship chipset, a more advanced build, and a larger camera circle. Its back is made from a synthetic leather variant that’s six times more wear-resistant than before, and the frame is crafted from a new aluminum alloy. The 6.73-inch LTPO OLED screen has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, a resolution of 1440p, and Xiaomi Shield glass for improved drop protection. The panel supports HDR10+, Google's Ultra HDR standard, and Dolby Vision.
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra performs excellently with good thermals. The worldwide version does not allow microSD, although it does include 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Its 5,000mAh battery can be charged quickly in just 34 minutes. A 50MP main camera, a 50MP 3.2x telephoto, a 50MP 5x telephoto, and a 50MP ultrawide camera are all part of the camera configuration. The camera captures exceptional dynamic range, vibrant colors, and fine detail in both daytime and nighttime photos. It supports 4K video recording at 60 frames per second with exceptional stability and quality. For those looking for a flagship with state-of-the-art cameras, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is still a great option, even with its poor selfies and short battery life.

5. OnePlus 12
The OnePlus 12 differs from the OnePlus 11 in a number of ways, including a bigger battery, a brighter and larger screen, and upgraded cameras. It also has a smooth matte Gorilla Glass 5 back, marbled accents, and a circular camera island. It's heavy, IP65-rated for dust and splash resistance, has a 6.82-inch OLED screen with QHD resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, supports HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and high-frame-rate gaming, has a brightness of up to 1250 nits when in auto mode, stereo speakers provide good volume and enhanced sound quality, and has a reliable and fast under-display fingerprint reader.
Although benchmark scores are marginally lower than anticipated in default mode, the phone's improved performance and ray tracing for games are made possible by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU. Android 14's OxygenOS 14 offers OnePlus-specific features along with a recognizable UI. The IR blaster enables appliance control, and the worldwide model has 256 or 512GB of non-expandable storage. With 50W wireless charging and 100W rapid charging, it can be fully charged in 24 minutes. Its 5400mAh battery lasts for 14 hours and 11 minutes.
The OnePlus 12 has a 50MP primary camera, a 64MP telephoto camera, and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. The primary camera takes detailed, colorful pictures with a broad dynamic range, and the night mode yields great results. The telephoto and ultra-wide cameras provide good dynamic range and detail but have some color balance problems. Videos can be recorded in 4K with good stabilization, though exposure and white balance need work. All things considered, the OnePlus 12 offers good upgrades, a distinctive design, and excellent cameras, making it a powerful flagship device.

6. Sony Xperia 1 VI
The 2024 flagship, the Sony Xperia 1 Mark 6, carries on the Xperia tradition of high-end cameras with a redesigned interface and an enhanced telephoto lens. It has a less remote-like sensation thanks to its wider 19.5:9 aspect ratio than its predecessor's 21:9. With its ribbed metal frame, IP65/IP68 water resistance, and Gorilla Glass Victus back, the design is still functional.
With LTPO technology, a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and 1080p resolution, the 6.5" OLED screen is now brighter and easier to see in direct sunlight. Front-facing stereo speakers, high-end circuitry, and a 3.5mm headphone connector are examples of audio upgrades.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset drives performance, although benchmarks are impacted by thermal throttling. With a 5,000mAh battery that allows for more than 17 hours of continuous use, battery life is exceptional. Wireless and reverse charging are supported, and charging stays at 30W.
The cameras—a 12MP telephoto with continuous optical zoom up to 7.1x, a 48MP primary, and a 12MP ultrawide with autofocus—are sturdy. Outstanding dynamic range, color accuracy, and natural detail are provided by the primary camera. In bright light, the telephoto works well; however, in poor light, it has trouble at high zoom levels. While the ultrawide provides excellent clarity for close-ups and landscapes, a new telephoto macro mode produces breathtaking close-ups.
Unique features of the Xperia 1 Mark VI include sophisticated gaming choices, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, expandable storage, and connection with the Sony Alpha camera. It does not, however, have the advanced AI functions that rivals do.

9. Oppo Find X6 Pro
The Oppo Fex 6 Pro is Oppo's new camera-centric flagship, bringing cutting-edge camera technology and fancy features, but with one major downside: it’s currently China-only. The phone has a main cam with a 1-inch IMX 989 sensor, plus an excellent ultra-wide and telephoto cam, tuned in partnership with Hasselblad. It also features a fancy waterproof design, a high-res AMOLED display, fast charging, and the latest flagship chipset. Available with an all-glass or eco-leather back, the Fex 6 Pro has a two-tone design, a huge round camera bump, an aluminum bezel mimicking a camera lens grip, and IP68 water and dust protection. The 6.82-inch LTPO3 AMOLED display has a QHD resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. It’s sharp, smooth, and adaptive for energy savings, with an optical fingerprint scanner under the display.
The Fex 6 Pro runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. It also features an in-house developed MariSilicon X chip for advanced image processing. The phone offers flagship-grade performance, with gaming and multitasking being a breeze, though thermal throttling was observed during stress tests. Powered by a 5,000mAh battery with 100W SuperVOOC charging, it charges from 0 to 64% in 15 minutes and up to 100% in 30 minutes. The camera setup includes a 50.3MP main cam, 50MP ultra-wide, and 50MP telephoto, offering detailed and natural-looking photos. The main cam delivers fantastic shots, including lossless zoom and excellent portrait modes. The ultra-wide camera takes detailed photos with minimal distortion and supports macro close-ups. Night mode ensures bright, sharp, and detailed photos even in low light. The 32MP front-facing cam delivers solid selfies, with HDR improving dynamic range.
The Fex 6 Pro supports 4K video recording at 60FPS with impressive quality from the main, telephoto, and ultra-wide cameras. The rear cameras include electronic stabilization, ensuring smooth footage even in low light. The only downside is its availability, as it is currently exclusive to China. While Oppo has no plans to release it outside China, it can still be imported, making it a worthwhile option for those willing to deal with Chinese software. Alternatives to the Fex 6 Pro include the Xiaomi 13 Pro or Vivo X90 Pro.
